Blueprint for Success
Christina and Marcus visit an architectural firm on career day.
While learning about the jobs of architects, the students hear
about a vacant lot being donated in their neighborhood. The
challenge is to help them design a playground and ball field
for the lot. |

BFS involves basic linear measurement, understanding
and creating scale representations, and opportunities to explore
the relationships among linear, area, and volume measurement.
It provides a motivating entrance into the world of geometry,
with hands-on classroom activities and challenges that can be
extended for more advanced students.
For grades 5 and up. |
The Right Angle
Paige Littlefield, a Native American, is following a set of
clues to find a family heirlom her grandfather left for her
in a cave. As Paige searches for the cave we learn about topographic
maps and concepts of geometry important for measurement. An
accident occurs when Paige reaches the cave. Students must help
her friend, Ryan, find the cave on a map and give directions
for the Rescue Squad to get there as quickly as possible. |

Incorporating real-world map-reading skills with
angle and linear measurement, this is a challenging episode
for math and social studies. Students learn to use bearing guides
and concepts of similar triangles. Many teachers report more
success with this adventure after students have some knowledge
of basic angle measurement.
For grades 6 and up. |
The Great Circle Race
Jasper's newspaper sponsors a contest where racers can start
anywhere outside a large circle with a radius of 5 miles. Only
non-motorized modes of transportation are allowed. Students
need to read a topographic map, interpret data about speeds
of racers, and use compass clues to predict who will win the
race. |

Building on skills introduced in The Right Angle,
this episode involves angle and linear measurement, use of bearing
guides and topographic map reading. In addition students learn
about triangulation and circle measurement. Many teachers report
more success with this adventure after students have some knowledge
of basic angle measurement.
